“Falsely Accused by Coworker”: Taslima Nasreen on Hindu Man’s Lynching in Bangladesh

Taslima Nasreen speaks out after a Hindu man is lynched in Bangladesh following an alleged false blasphemy accusation.

Taslima Nasreen, an exiled Bangladeshi novelist and a human rights advocate, has proposed a hypothesis that the murdered Hindu boy in Bangladesh was falsely branded as a blasphemer by a co-worker who got police protection as he was the one who was about to be killed.

Dipu Chandra Das was the name of the deceased, he was employed in a factory located in Bhaluka town which is part of the Mymensingh district. According to Nasreen, the whole thing started when a Muslim colleague pointed at Dipu during a minor dispute in the office and accused him of disrespecting the Prophet.

In a social media post on the platform X, Nasreen released a video of Dipu and said that the accusation quickly led to mob violence. She argued that the first attack on the victim was made by the angry mob and the police later came, arrested him, and then provided him with protection.

Nasreen told that Dipu was constantly speaking to the police claiming his innocence and saying that the accusations against him were untrue. Nasreen alleged that the accusing colleague was not punished and also raised questions regarding how Dipu was returned to the mob.

In her comments, Nasreen questioned if police negligence or outside interference were the causes of the incident escalating. She termed the murder a brutal act that occurred even while Dipu was under state protection.

As a way of emphasizing the human aspect of the tragedy, Nasreen stated that Dipu was the sole provider for his family. His disability caused parents’ support and a little kid’s warm wife to absorb all his income. She shared her worries about the family and insisted on the punishment of the murderers.

The problem of lynching has been loudly condemned and has once more heightened the fears of mob violence, religious intolerance, and the standing of minorities in Bangladesh in general. The government has promised that the probes have actually started.
