The Bhogapuram International Greenfield Airport in Andhra Pradesh, which has been under construction for quite a while, took a huge step towards being able to take in and process passengers with the successful trial runway operation conducted on Sunday, January 4, 2023. An aircraft of Air India coming from New Delhi landed at the airport, and after that, a ceremonial water salute was given to it marking the airport project with another milestone.
Ram Mohan Naidu, the Union Minister of Civil Aviation and one of the passengers of the flight, announced that the airport would be ready to use in four months and the inauguration would be done by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Andhra Pradesh’s Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu not only welcomed the trial as a rare event but also as a major factor in the faster development of the region due to great improvement in the area’s connectivity .YSRCP chief , Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, was of the same opinion that the very first landing was a sign of the region’s progress.
Project Status: 96% Work Completed
The Bhogapuram airport project which was started almost ten years ago has now reached the last phase as the officials are assuring that the construction is almost 96% done. The GMR Group, which was the airport’s producer, nevertheless had to go through a protracted period full of land disputes, compensation disagreements, and governmental changes before the airport finally opened.
The test saw the runway take an Air India flight carrying top officials from the DGCA and AAI. The authorities had already examined and verified the runway, navigational aids, air traffic control systems, safety measures, and complete technical readiness.
Inana Prabhakar Rao, the GMR Group’s Deputy Managing Director, has commented that the terminal, access roads, navigational systems, radar and ATC facilities are close to being completed. Weather and navigation equipment testing has already been completed, while only minor finishing works remain.

The airport terminal is being designed with a unique architectural theme inspired by a flying fish, reflecting Telugu cultural elements. The land area slated for the school is approximately 2,700 acres and may support future expansion as well.
Key Highlights:
- Total area: 2,700 acres
- Terminal area: 81,000 sq. metres
- Aero bridges: 22
- Initial capacity: 6 million passengers annually
- First phase cost: ₹4,750 crore
- Runway length: 3.8 km, capable of handling wide-body aircraft like the Airbus A380
Bhogapuram Airport, which pays tribute to the great Alluri Sitarama Raju, is situated approximately 55 kilometers from Visakhapatnam, 25 kilometers from Vizianagaram, and 55 kilometers away from Srikakulam..
Timeline and Political Claims
In the year 2015 the Andhra Pradesh government first sanctioned the airport project which was followed by the Centre’s approval in 2016. The first projection for the start of operations was 2023, but due to delays, the actual commissioning of the airport was pushed farther. The project had two ground-breaking ceremonies, the first during 2019 and the second in 2023.
The project has an official completion date of December 2026, but the Union Civil Aviation Minister hinted that the new airport would become operational in June 2026, with commercial flights opening in June and full passenger services starting in August.
Real Estate Boom and Local Concerns
The airport announcement has triggered a real estate boom in Bhogapuram and surrounding areas. According to local real estate agents, the prices of land which were previously measured in lakhs have now increased to crores. On the other hand, a few farmers accuse that the investors have monopolized most of the lands while the residents who sold their lands before are feeling that they have lost the opportunity to sell their lands at a higher price.
Connectivity Challenges
Connectivity is still a big issue even after the advancements made in this regard. The new Bhogapuram Airport will be located 55 km away from Visakhapatnam, with an estimated journey time of 1 to 1.5 hours. When the airport starts operations, the existing traffic will be diverted from Visakhapatnam Airport which is already overcrowded due to naval operations and the restriction of night landings.
Airlines have cautioned that the lack of good road infrastructure could drive away customers and even make it more expensive to get to the airport by ground than by air. However, the authorities are saying that around 45 minutes will be the travel time because a beach corridor plus several highway projects are on the drawing board.
Bhogapuram Airport has now it emerges as a major aviation hub for North Andhra with the completion of the successful trial run, subject to the last-mile connectivity issues being solved in time.
