Bangladesh Army Reshuffle After Tarique Rahman Takes Office; Defence Adviser in India Recalled

Bangladesh implemented a comprehensive military reorganization which altered vital military positions and intelligence management and international diplomatic assignments on the third day after Tarique Rahman became Prime Minister.

The changes come after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) obtained a two-thirds majority during the February 12 elections. Rahman took oath on February 17, ending the 18-month administration led by Muhammad Yunus.

The military has appointed a new Chief of General Staff who will start his duties immediately.

Army Headquarters issued official orders which named Lieutenant General M Mainur Rahman as the new Chief of General Staff (CGS) position. He will succeed Lieutenant General Mizanur Rahman Shamim who has gone on retirement leave.

The military intelligence unit has made personnel changes.

The government appointed Major General Kaiser Rashid Chowdhury as the new Director General of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI). He will take official command after he receives his major general promotion. Major General Mohammad Jahangir Alam who served as his predecessor has been assigned to the foreign ministry to work as an ambassador.

The foreign ministry has received new staff members and diplomatic assignments.

Lieutenant General SM Kamrul Hasan who served as Principal Staff Officer has been reassigned to the foreign ministry for a diplomatic posting. The newly promoted Lieutenant General Mir Mushfiqur Rahman will take over his duties.

The Indian government has called back its defence adviser from India.

The Bangladesh High Commission in India has recalled Brigadier General Mohammad Hafizur Rahman from his post as defence adviser. He has been promoted to major general and appointed General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 55th Infantry Division.

Major General JM Imdadul Islam who previously led the division will now serve as Commandant of the East Bengal Regimental Centre.

The government implementation of personnel changes for all operational commands and intelligence units and diplomatic posts has created a new strategic direction for the country.
