Elon Musk’s Starlink Set for Trial Run in Mumbai on October 30–31

Elon Musk’s Starlink to Begin Trial Run in Mumbai on October 30–31, Ahead of India Launch

Elon Musk’s satellite internet venture Starlink is gearing up to conduct trial demonstrations in Mumbai on October 30 and 31, marking a major milestone toward its commercial rollout in India.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the demonstrations will be held before law enforcement and regulatory agencies to verify Starlink’s compliance with India’s security and technical standards for satellite-based broadband services.

These trials will operate using provisionally assigned spectrum, and their successful completion will be a crucial step in obtaining final approvals for commercial launch in the Indian market.

The demonstrations are designed to ensure Starlink’s adherence to the technical and security requirements under the Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) authorization framework.

Currently, over 10 satellite internet operators, including Starlink, have received GMPCS licenses to operate in India. The sector, now open to 100% foreign direct investment (FDI), is witnessing growing interest from global players aiming to expand high-speed broadband access across remote and underserved regions.

In Context:
Starlink’s entry into India is expected to transform the country’s satellite broadband landscape, offering high-speed internet in rural and remote areas where traditional infrastructure remains limited. If approved after the trial phase, Starlink could begin commercial operations in 2026, intensifying competition with other satellite internet providers such as OneWeb and Amazon’s Kuiper.
