Former US President Donald Trump on Tuesday seemed to retract a very controversial idea that had been named a “Board of Peace” and instead talked about the world body being involved in global diplomacy.
During a brief interaction with the press, Trump was inquired about the so-called Board of Peace and if it could assist in the resolution of international disputes. He did not go into details and redirected to the United Nations.
“You’ve got to let the UN continue,” was Trump’s response but he did not provide further explanation on the idea or its possible implementation.
The comments came at a time when the world had once again turned its attention to international organizations and their role in conflict prevention and peace maintenance. The idea of a “Board of Peace” has been brought up in political and diplomatic discussions but has not yet been clearly defined and it is still uncertain if Trump is in favor of such a body since his statements did not provide much clarity.
Throughout his presidency, Trump has not been shy about expressing his disdain towards the United Nations, regularly bringing up the inefficiency and the questionable funding of the world body. Nevertheless, the former US president has seemingly toned down his criticism, at least for the time being, with regard to the UN’s continuous involvement in the peacekeeping process.
Among the political commentators, the opinion is that the President’s statement might be an attempt to sidestep a commitment to a controversial or vaguely defined proposal, while at the same time recognizing the UN’s current role in international peacekeeping.
The comment Trump made, though very short, has led to so many questions that it will take the time of the diplomats and the analysts to figure out whether the “Board of Peace” is just an idea put forward in words or whether it is something that might be discussed in terms of policy again in the future.
