Google Cloud announced its America-India Connect infrastructure project together with its $15 billion investment which will distribute funds over five years to develop digital networks and create network protection systems and enhance artificial intelligence access throughout India and other regions.
The initiative establishes high-speed networks throughout Asia and Africa and Australia and the Americas to decrease the rising digital and artificial intelligence gap which will benefit economic development and digital modernization efforts.
New Subsea Routes to Strengthen Global Connectivity
The project will establish new international infrastructure through partnerships with local organizations which include:
A new subsea gateway in Visakhapatnam on India’s east coast
Three new subsea routes linking India with Singapore, South Africa, and Australia
Four strategic fiber-optic corridors connecting the United States and India with multiple Southern Hemisphere locations
The system upgrades will deliver better network capacity and system reliability and operational backup through all international data transmission routes.
Visakhapatnam to Become a Key Digital Gateway
The eastern port city of Visakhapatnam (Vizag) will emerge as a major international subsea landing hub.
New direct fiber paths will connect:
Vizag to South Africa through Chennai
Vizag to Singapore
The new routes will establish high-capacity connections between American coastal regions and Africa and Australia and India through an extension of existing global cable systems. The move also adds geographic diversity beyond current landing points in Mumbai and Chennai, strengthening India’s digital backbone.
West Coast Expansion from Mumbai
The new fiber route will establish a direct connection from Mumbai to Western Australia which will create a new trans-Pacific link between the United States and Australia and India.
This will enhance existing data corridors and improve international data flow reliability.
Supporting India’s AI Workforce
Alongside infrastructure, Google is expanding its AI skilling efforts in partnership with the Government of India’s Mission Karmayogi.
Through the Karmayogi Bharat platform, Google Cloud is providing secure cloud infrastructure for the iGOT (Integrated Government Online Training) system, which serves:
- Over 20 million public servants
- Across 800+ districts
AI tools will enhance content discovery, digitize legacy training materials, and enable learning in 18+ Indian languages, helping build a future-ready civil service.
Closing the AI Divide
Google said the initiative is designed to ensure that improved connectivity translates into affordable internet access, better digital services, and wider AI adoption for businesses, governments, and individuals.
By transforming traditional trade routes into digital corridors, the company aims to strengthen economic ties and support the next phase of global digital growth.
