West Indies powerhouse and Kolkata Knight Riders icon Andre Russell has officially retired from the Indian Premier League after an illustrious 14-year journey. Following his release ahead of the IPL 2026 mini-auction, Russell has now taken on a new chapter with KKR, joining the franchise staff as their Power Coach.
The move marks the end of an era for one of the IPL’s most explosive match-winners—yet his association with the Kolkata-based franchise continues in a new role.
Russell Chooses Loyalty Over Auction Spotlight
Despite being eligible to re-enter the upcoming auction, Russell stated he could not picture himself playing for any team other than KKR, whom he represented for 12 seasons.
“I don’t want to fade out… I want to leave a legacy behind,” Russell said emotionally, adding that retiring too early was better than hearing he “should’ve stopped years ago.”
He also revealed that seeing fan-edited images of him in different jerseys was unsettling:
“I felt weird seeing myself in anything but purple and gold. Those thoughts gave me sleepless nights.”
Moving Into a New Role: Power Coach
Russell shared that discussions about his post-player role had been ongoing with KKR CEO Venky Mysore and co-owner Shah Rukh Khan, both of whom encouraged him to remain part of the franchise family.
The new designation—Power Coach—resonated deeply with him.
“When I heard the title, I knew it fit. Power with the bat, energy in the field—I’ll help wherever the team needs.”
Beyond IPL commitments, Russell is expected to continue playing in other global T20 tournaments and remain involved across the broader Knight Riders global network.
Andre Russell’s IPL Legacy: A Record to Remember
Across 140 IPL matches, Russell built one of the most feared statistical profiles in league history:
- Runs: 2,651
- Strike Rate: 174.18
- Wickets: 123
- MVP Titles: 2015, 2019
With KKR alone, he delivered:
- Runs: 2,593
- Wickets: 122
From unforgettable six-hitting furies to match-saving spells, Russell’s impact on KKR and IPL cricket remains unmatched.
A Knight Forever
Though his playing days in the IPL have officially concluded, Russell assured fans he will remain connected to the franchise he calls home.
“So Kolkata, I’ll be back… Korbo, Lorbo, Jeetbo!”
With Andre Russell shifting roles, the 2026 season will mark a new phase for Kolkata Knight Riders—one where he transforms from match-winner to mentor.
