IMD Rain Alert: Low Pressure Likely in Bay of Bengal; Heavy Rains Forecast in Parts of Andhra Pradesh and Cold Wave Returns to Telangana

Low-pressure formation over the Bay of Bengal likely to trigger rains in Andhra Pradesh and intensify cold and fog conditions in Telangana.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a weather alarm since the beginning of the year; the Bay of Bengal meteorological conditions have started to exhibit rapid changes. The surface depression which has been very patchy throughout the month of December is now located in the southwest Bay of Bengal near Sri Lanka and is expected to become a low-pressure area in three days.

In the IMD’s view, the low-pressure surge is going to be around January 8 causing rainfall over a number of southern states. Though Tamil Nadu would receive the major blow from the low-pressure system, Andhra Pradesh would still be able to feel some of the impacts, particularly in the southern-coastal and the Rayalaseema areas where it is predicted that light to moderate showers will occur. Rain during the time of the Sankranti festival has become a matter of concern for the people and the farmers.

Andhra Pradesh Weather Update

Meteorologists have assessed that the impact of the Bay of Bengal system would be very minimal and that it would only produce scattered rainfall in the southern part of Andhra Pradesh. The coastal areas and Rayalaseema will, most likely, be under the clouds and see a bit of rain from time to time, which will cause some inconvenience in terms of both movement and celebrations.

Fog and Cold Conditions Persist

On the other hand, the severe weather conditions that had temporarily relaxed in the states of Telugu are now coming back more forcefully. Paderu, Chintapalli, Minumuluru, and other places have been under heavy fog in parts of Alluri Sitarama Raju district. The cooler and foggy weather conditions have drawn in numerous tourists to the hill areas since the weather has turned out to be more pleasant.

Cold Wave ‘2.0’ in Telangana

In Telangana, weather experts have warned of Cold Wave 2.0, with cold winds set to intensify from January 5 onwards. Unlike previous spells, this phase is expected to lower not only night and morning temperatures but also daytime temperatures. The chill is likely to peak during Sankranti, accompanied by dense fog across many districts.

Temperature Outlook

The IMD’s predictions about the weather indicate that the lowest temperatures in Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, and Mancherial will only be 5–10°C for the next four to five days. In the other areas, the least temperature during the nights will not be lower than 15°C.

In Hyderabad, the weather is a mixture of clouds and sun, with very thick fog in the morning and night. The city’s temperature is predicted to be at its lowest 18°C and at its highest 27°C.

Lowest Temperatures Recorded

Telangana had the coldest nights during the past weekend with Nalgonda and Hanamkonda showing 15 degrees Celsius each. Besides these locations, Medak with 15.2 degrees Celsius, Adilabad with 16.2 degrees Celsius, Ramagundam with 16.6 degrees Celsius, and Nizamabad with 17.2 degrees Celsius had also relatively low temperatures. The temperature in Hyderabad was 13 degrees Celsius in Patancheru and 14 degrees Celsius in Rajendranagar while the temperature variation in Hakimpet and Begumpet was 16.8 degrees Celsius to 17.7 degrees Celsius.

IMD still foresees cold, fog and sudden rains during the next days hence people are advised to take precautions particularly while traveling early in the morning, and should cover themselves.
