Warangal Set to Emerge as Telangana’s Next Mega City with Airport and Major Infrastructure Push

Mamunur Airport revival and large-scale infrastructure projects are accelerating Warangal’s transformation into a modern urban hub.

In conversations about the largest city in Telangana, Hyderabad has no other option than to be the first and most important. Nevertheless, Warangal now is riding high on the wave of an airport revival and an array of monumental infrastructure projects that are making it the next major urban center of the state.

The most important in this list of developments is the long-dreamed revival of Mamunur Airport, which was a demand of Warangal citizens for decades. The government has sanctioned the project and allotted ₹295 crore for the purchase of 253 acres of land that is required for the expansion. The earlier delays caused by regulations around airport locations that restricted it to within a 150-km radius have been mitigated and construction is now on the cards. The airport when complete will have a large impact on the national and international connectivity of North Telangana.

Along the city, other infrastructure development is also setting the pace. The work on the Outer Ring Road (ORR) is being done at the same time to make it easy for the airport and city to connect. To help with this new road, that will link the airport Kakatiya Mega Textile Park, is also in the plan. These projects will not only alleviate traffic bottlenecks but also facilitate the movement of people between the city and industry; thus turning Warangal into a modern transportation and logistics center.

In the industrial area, the Railway Manufacturing Unit at Kazipet is in its final stages of construction with the cost of the project estimated at ₹521 crore. The unit is going to create employment opportunities in thousands. At the same time, the Kakatiya Mega Textile Park is getting ready for an all-out war of going full-scale production. With the central government backing Warangal under the PM Mitra scheme, its position as a major textile-making center will soon be stronger and more promising.

Healthcare and civic infrastructure are also witnessing a major upgrade. A 24-storey super specialty hospital, constructed on the former Warangal Central Jail premises at a cost exceeding ₹1,800 crore, is almost complete. The state-of-the-art facility will effectively provide North Telangana residents with access to high-end medical services and the like. At the same time, the long-pending underground drainage project has commenced finally with an allocation of ₹500 crore for the first phase of the project.

Owing to its quick advancements in aviation, transport, industry, healthcare and urban services, Warangal has ceased to be only a historical city—it is taking the shape of the next Hyderabad in Telangana steadily.
