The Super 8 stage of the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup starts with a high-voltage match against Pakistan and New Zealand at the R Premadasa Stadium on Saturday. Weather forecasts indicate that rain is likely to have a critical say in this intense clash.
Heavy Rain Forecast for Colombo
As per reports, 80–100% cloud cover is predicted for Colombo on the day of the match. The probability for rain starts at 75% during the day and climbs to 87% by evening for the 7 PM IST start. Additionally, there’s a major area of concern, with 52% probability of thunderstorms, which might lead to an attack on the match including a likely delay or probable abandonment at night.
Match Abandoned?
If, however, the conditions prove so severe that the match gets washed out, both sides will be given a single point each. Given that no reserve day is scheduled for the Super 8 matches, the washout could have a major effect on the chances of one team winding up in the semifinals.
Pakistan made it through the Super 8s, finishing as the runner-up to the Indian cricket team of Group A, and New Zealand qualified as runners-up behind the South Africa cricket team in Group D. Playing limited games makes it critical to top the points table.
Key On-Field Battle
Weather permitting, New Zealand’s middle order will be the decisive factor to beat the Pakistani spinnuers. Tim Seifert and Finn Allen provide a good start up, followed by some substandard performance from the middle-lower order. Players such as Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell have not contributed much in terms of steady play throughout their stay at the crease.
Home advantage
Having played two matches previously at the venue in Colombo, Pakistan may hold the edge. Their bowlers, mainly spinners, are already familiar with the slow wickets, where nudging strokes are many times more important than hitting for sixes.
New Zealand, however, will be playing in the region for the first time in the tournament and is a whole separate layer of complication if weather conditions get tricky.
