The mini auction for IPL 2026 is nearing and the event preparations are going on to their last stage. The auction is scheduled for December 16 at the Etihad Arena, Abu Dhabi, commencing at 2:30 PM IST as per the BCCI confirmation.
During the auction, the Punjab Kings, with Captain Shreyas Iyer at the helm, will be in total control of the team’s strategy, considering that the head coach Ricky Ponting will not be present. The ex-player of Australia will not be present at the mini auction since he is currently in Australia for the Ashes commentary and has a contract with Channel Seven.
Iyer Takes the Lead
Though Ponting is not present, Iyer will be in charge of selecting the players and handling the auction money of the franchise. Punjab Kings has four vacant positions in their team, which comprise two foreigner slots, thus the captain has an important role in deciding the final team mix.
Squad Plans and Budget
The franchise has let go of overseas players Aaron Hardie, Josh Inglis and Kyle Jamieson, thus giving them a total of ₹11.50 crore to fill their 25-member team. Punjab is likely to aim for an Indian spin option, an overseas top-order batsman or all-rounder as well as an overseas fast bowler for backup.
Strong 2025 Season
Shreyas Iyer, who worked with Ponting last season, was the main reason for Punjab Kings’ path to the IPL 2025 final, which was their first appearance in the ultimate battle after 11 years. The hitter had a very successful season and scored 604 runs with a 50 average and a remarkable strike rate of 175.
As Iyer was the principal figure at the auction table, the cricket world will keep a close eye on the Punjab Kings to see how they will allocate the remaining funds to enhance the team before the IPL 2026 season.
