US Embassy and Consulates in India Closed for Christmas Holidays; Services Resume December 27

US Embassy and Consulates in India closed for Christmas holidays; services resume December 27, 2025.

The Embassies and Consulates of the United States in India have been shut down since December 24, 2025, Wednesday, as per the Presidential Executive Order of US President Donald Trump. The stoppage is timed perfectly with the federal government’s Christmas holiday which is made up of no consular services on Christmas Eve and the day after Christmas, that is, December 24 to 26, 2025.

Normal visa issuing and other consular services will be available again from December 27, 2025. All the consular activities including visa issuing and giving other services will be continued from December 26, 2025. It is advised that the people who travel and apply for visas should change their plans.

The Executive Order mentions that employees of all executive departments and agencies of the United States federal government will get holidays on December 24 and 26, the government will be closed on those days. Nevertheless, department heads may point out certain offices or sites that will stay open to serve the security, defence, or other public needs during the closure.

The reason behind this holiday break is to allow federal workers to take a rest and have their spirits lifted after the long government shutdown that occurred earlier this year. Previously, the Christmas Eve was made a federal holiday by the tradition of different administrations, e.g., President Trump in the years 2018, 2019, and 2020, and President Biden in 2024.

US Federal Holidays: Christmas is among the 11 recognized federal holidays, which consist of New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, and a few more holidays.
