In a major pre-auction shake-up, Sanju Samson is reportedly set to leave Rajasthan Royals (RR) and join Delhi Capitals (DC) in one of the biggest trade deals ahead of the IPL 2026 auction. The potential player swap, involving South African wicketkeeper-batter Tristan Stubbs, is said to be in its final stages.
According to reports, Samson, who has been part of the Rajasthan Royals setup for over a decade, requested the franchise to either trade him or release him into the upcoming mini-auction.
Samson’s Rift With Royals Management
Sources suggest the rift between Samson and RR management stemmed from the decision to release former England captain Jos Buttler, a move that reportedly disappointed the RR skipper. “With Samson making his intention to leave clear, both RR and DC entered negotiations, exploring multiple trade combinations,” a report stated.
Initially, Delhi Capitals were hesitant to trade any of their key players, but talks have since advanced positively.
Stubbs Swap and Other Trade Talks
As per insider reports, RR showed interest in acquiring KL Rahul, but Delhi quickly turned down the proposal, citing Rahul’s importance to their setup and brand value. Eventually, RR agreed to a player swap involving Tristan Stubbs, though they also sought an additional uncapped player — a request DC declined.
If finalized, the deal will mark Sanju Samson’s return to the Delhi franchise, having earlier represented the team (then called Delhi Daredevils) at the start of his IPL career.
CSK and KKR Out of the Race
For months, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were believed to be in the hunt for Samson, but talks reportedly collapsed after RR demanded either Ravindra Jadeja or Ruturaj Gaikwad in return — a proposal CSK refused. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) were also briefly linked to the RR skipper before withdrawing interest.
Unless last-minute changes occur, Sanju Samson’s move to Delhi Capitals is expected to be among the most high-profile trades ahead of the IPL 2026 auction.
