The Meteorological Department of India (IMD) has put on record that a two-day yellow alert for heavy rain and thunderstorms has been issued for the days of November 16 and 17 in Chennai and the adjoining areas. Residents have been told to be on the alert and make plans accordingly because the region will be experiencing frequent showers.
The Rain Will Be Strongest On The Weekend
IMD prediction suggests that rain will be at its heaviest on the weekend with showers expected to be widespread in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands during the latter half of November.
The agency has also forecasted light to moderate rains and scattered heavy showers in Tamil Nadu on the 12th, 17th, and 18th of November. Similar conditions will be there in Kerala and Mahe from November 12 to 13. Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema are likely to receive heavy rainfall on the 17th and 18th of November.
The Rain Is Caused By Cyclonic Circulation
Meteorologists are saying that the next rains are due to a cyclonic circulation that is still situated over the southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal and is about 1.5 km above sea level. The system is still sucking moisture from the ocean into southern India, thus making the conditions right for widespread rain and thunderstorms.
Independent weather stations have indicated that the districts of southern Tamil Nadu such as Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, and Tirunelveli can expect moderate to heavy showers, while the northern coastal regions will have lighter rainfall and mainly dry conditions.
