Samsung’s Wide Foldable Leak Signals Early Showdown With Apple’s Foldable iPhone

Concept image of Samsung’s rumored Wide Fold smartphone, expected to debut ahead of Apple’s foldable iPhone.

Despite Apple’s announcement to release foldable smartphones under its brand, Samsung is already ready for the fight with the customer that might not even come. Recently, a leak indicated that the Korean manufacturer is working on a “Wide Fold” which, in terms of the outer dimensions, could be similar to what are called the folding iPhones.

A fresh report from the Korean media ETNews claims that Samsung is making plans for a wide-format foldable phone. The company considers Apple’s future folding iPhone while designing this new phone. This new model, which has a broader tablet-like experience, is not going to be part of the tall, book-style Galaxy Z Fold line.

One of the biggest differences would be the aspect ratios of the screens. A 7.6-inch inner OLED display with a 4:3 aspect ratio is what the Wide Fold is talking about; plus, there’s going to be a 5.4-inch outer display. Once the device is fully opened, it will look like a small laptop or passport, thus making the reading, surfing, and watching activities more balanced and comfortable.

What is also interesting is that Apple’s first foldable iPhone is speculated to be of a very same size range, with the device getting a report of a 7.58-inch inner display which will again be of 4:3 aspect ratio. If this turns out to be the case, then the opening of both devices would be the same, and the rest like design, hardware, and software would become the deciding factors.

The sources of the industry quoted by ETNews suggest that the reason behind Samsung’s move towards wider foldables is the matter of usability. A broader screen is said to improve stability when held with both hands and deliver a more natural experience for everyday tasks such as reading and viewing photos.

The Wide Fold is not expected to replace Samsung’s existing Fold model. Rather, according to rumors, Samsung is going to broaden the range of its foldable devices starting from next year by introducing three models: a Galaxy Z Flip, an ordinary Fold that will keep the present tall design, and the Wide Fold. This tactic would allow Samsung to have one of the richest foldable assortments in the market at the very moment when Apple is about to launch its first folding gadget.

The report also claims the Wide Fold will support 25W wireless charging, the fastest wireless charging speed Samsung has offered so far. This feature is expected to debut first on the Galaxy S26 Ultra before extending to foldable devices.

Samsung is allegedly planning to introduce the Wide Fold in the fall of 2026, possibly coinciding with the release of the foldable iPhone from Apple. If this is true, it would be a very bold step by Samsung and they would be the first one to charge into the next battle in the smartphone evolution.
