KKR’s Bold Move: Cameron Green Bought for Rs. 25.20 Crore to Lead Post-Russell Era

Cameron Green joins KKR for a record Rs. 25.20 crore, ready to play a key role in IPL 2026’s top order.

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and their dramatic auction move for Australian all-rounder Cameron Green to the tune of Rs. 25.20 crore, the highest ever paid for a foreign player in IPL auction history and the third highest overall, were the IPL 2026 auction’s major news.

KKR head coach Abhishek Nair, despite the discussions about the record-breaking expense, reiterated that this amount invests in a long-term plan and not a seasonal gamble. Green’s selection was made consciously considering the departure of Andre Russell, who was the team’s ace and is no longer with them.

Filling the Russell Gap

Nair emphasized, “We decided to go for Green at any cost. After Andre Russell left, we needed a player who could shoulder the team’s responsibility. We strongly believed that Green had that ability. His appointment was non-negotiable.”

Green’s Role in the Top Order

Green is anticipated to be an important player as a batsman in the top order and at the same time keep on performing his duties as an all-rounder. Nair pointed out that the team is depending on him to make huge runs—perhaps 500 during the season—to be the anchor at the top. Historical data indicates that KKR has been successful when their top-order batsman scored runs and the franchise looks forward to that from Green.

Impressive Track Record

Cameron Green has a total of 521 runs in T20 international matches with an average of 32.56 and strike rate of 160.30, also taking 12 wickets in 21 matches. In the history of IPL, he has made 707 runs in 29 matches, consisting of one hundred and two fifties, and has also claimed 16 wickets. His all-round capabilities were the main factor behind KKR’s massive investment.

Venkatesh Iyer Missed Out

When, restored to IPL and increased their bid up to Rs 6.8 crore, KKR was trying to win back Venkatesh Iyer, ultimately secured by RCB on Rs 6.8 crore. 7 crore. Nair expressed gratitude, saying, “Venkatesh has been a franchise player for us since the beginning. We wish him all the best in his new journey.”

KKR’s IPL 2026 Plans

KKR made a total investment of Rs. 64.3 crore in the acquisition of 13 players, among whom were the likes of Matisha Pathirana, Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, and Rachin Ravindra. Under the leadership of Ajinkya Rahane, KKR is aiming to bounce back from last year’s losses and set their sights on a playoff position. The performance of Cameron Green will play an important role in the team’s future after-Russell as to whether they can prosper or not.
