Padikkal’s Heroic Chase Makes Ishan Kishan’s 33-Ball Century Go in Vain

Devdutt Padikkal celebrates after steering Karnataka to a historic run chase against Jharkhand in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025–26.

The Vijay Hazare One-Day Trophy 2025-26’s opening day gifted a rare occasion and a whole lot of records in List A cricket. Besides the other things, it was the players’ remarkable batting skills that were the focus of the day, which was not only well but also very distinctly shown through the fact that three of the eight fastest centuries ever made in List A cricket had occurred.

Sakibul Gani, an Indian player, who scored 100 in just 32 balls, was recognized as the fastest century holder in List A cricket, and then Ishaan Kishan from Jharkhand just behind him with a century in 33 balls while Vaibhav Suryavanshi also had the hundred in 36 balls, Their great performances were placed as the fourth and the eighth fastest centuries, respectively, in the all-time records of this format.

The run-fest did not stop there. Indian veterans Rohit Sharma (Mumbai) and Virat Kohli (Delhi), along with Karnataka’s rising star Devdutt Padikkal, also struck centuries on the same day. Odisha’s Swastik Samal went a step further, hammering a double century against Saurashtra. In total, an astonishing 22 centuries were scored on Day 1 of the tournament.

Padikkal’s Brilliance Overshadows Kishan’s Record Knock

Jharkhand could not hold on to the massive score even after Ishan Kishan’s phenomenal knock of 33 balls century. The remarkable act of Kishan was instrumental in Jharkhand scoring a huge total of 412 in just 50 overs, but ultimately the whole thing became a futile effort.

Karnataka easily achieved the target with Devdutt Padikkal leading the way, who scored a remarkable 147 runs off 118 balls hitting 10 fours and 7 sixes. The victory of Karnataka was practically built on Padikkal’s innings he was remarkably supported at the end by Abhinav Manohar (56 not out) and Dhruv Prabhakar (40 not out) who nicely completed the chase.

This outstanding run chase has now been given the second place in the list of highest successful chases in List A cricket history and the first and only chase in the history of the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

South African cricket team is still holding the incredible List A chase record, as they surprisingly chased down 435 runs set by Australia in Johannesburg in 2006.
