Bangladesh Protest LIVE: BNP Chief Tarique Rahman Returns After 17 Years

Tarique Rahman arrives at Dhaka Airport after 17 years in exile, welcomed by thousands of BNP supporters under tight security.

Tarique Rahman, the present head of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has made a remarkable comeback to Dhaka today after a 17-year-long exile. He is going to address Bangladesh at 3 PM, thereby starting his supposed political “second innings.”

Tremendous Public Reception and Security Measures

Crowd of supporters of the BNP converged at Dhaka Airport to welcome Tarique Rahman, thus forming considerable crowds in the major ways and public places. The entry of Rahman was through bulletproof bus that the party had arranged for him from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to the rally site, covering about 300 feet under hard security. It is hinted by party sources that nearly 50 lakh supporters will turn up at the public reception.

Power of politics and elections

In the next parliamentary elections scheduled for February 2026, Rahman will be the candidate for the Bogura-6 (Sadar) constituency, whereas BNP leader Khaleda Zia will contest from her bastion Bogura-7. His return is being regarded as regionally and globally important for India and politics with the current nurse chief Muhammad Yunus and radical Islamists’ growing influence as instability.

Bangladesh-India Relations Amid Crisis

The government of Dhaka is working to reduce the economic and political tensions with India. According to Salehuddin Ahmed, the Finance Adviser, the Chief Adviser, Muhammad Yunus, is making efforts to separate economic factors from political rhetoric. This is happening concurrently with Bangladesh’s approval of the purchase of 50,000 tons of rice from India, which had been previously discussed, and doing so amidst the strained ties of the two countries after the rice involved killed the student leader of Bangladesh, Sharif Osman Hadi. India has asked for a very diligent investigation while at the same time denying any of the fictitious stories that have come up concerning the matter.

Resignations Besides Concern for Security

Khuda Baksh Chowdhury, who was The Special Assistant to The Chief Advisor and was responsible for the Home Ministry, has resigned right after the Hadi killing and among other things arrests have been made in connection with the incident. The return of Rahman has also led to the authorities being on high alert along the Bangladesh-India border where local administration in conjunction with the BSF is eyeing movement across the borders stringently.

Reactions from the Community

Mayawati, the chief of the BSP, has made a very harsh comment about the Bangladesh government for its failure to safeguard the Hindu minority and has suggested that the Indian government should take firm actions. The Bangladeshi Christian leaders, however, have already expressed their fear regarding the security situation during the Christmas festivities after the latter were warned by extremist groups.

Flight and Arrival Information

Tarique Rahman, on December 24, 2025, flew from London and stopped at Osmani International Airport, Sylhet, on his way to Dhaka. His arrival in Dhaka was around 9:58 am today. His plans include going to Evercare Hospital for his mother, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, visiting the Feroza house in Gulshan, and possibly paying his father a visit at Chandrima Udyan grave.
