The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has dispatched a notice to the Dehradun District Magistrate and the Senior Superintendent of Police regarding the suspected racially motivated murder of a Tripura student, Anjel Chakma. The NHRC has directed an inquiry into the case and a report to be made available within a week.
The 24-year-old Anjel Chakma was studying MBA in one of the private universities of Dehradun and was involved in the racial incident trying to defend his brother. On the 9th of December, he was attacked by a group of young boys with a knife and a bracelet. On the 26th of December, after spending 17 days in the hospital, he died from his injuries. His father, who is a soldier in BSF in Manipur, claimed that the attack was racial as the attackers targeted his son for standing up for his Indian identity.
The NHRC Chaired by Priyank Kanoongo, has directed that the case papers be sent to the Chief Secretary and the Uttarakhand Police’s Director General. The commission further mentioned that the protection of all students from the North-East region in the state must be ensured as a right.
The complaint not only referred to the specific case of Anjel but also drew attention to the broader problem of racial discrimination against the people from North-Eastern states and pointed out the inability of the local authorities to prevent such attacks. The incident has made a big noise across the country and also led to the demand of politicians for immediate actions to stop hate crimes and guarantee the rights, dignity, and equality of North-Eastern people.
Uttarakhand’s Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami sympathized Anjel Chakma’s father during their phone conversation and promised to deliver the harshest punishment to the guilty. Besides, the victim’s justice was demanded through candlelight vigils and protests in Tripura and various other Indian states.
