Pakistani Woman’s Milk-Boiling Rant Triggers Online Debate

Pakistani influencer Maya Khan’s late-night milk-boiling rant ignites social media discussion on raw milk habits.

A woman’s complaint from Pakistan on the daily task of boiling unpasteurised milk went viral and at the same time started a hot discussion on social platforms. Maya Khan uploaded an Instagram video where she showed opening the milk packets and boiling them at almost midnight, thus fundamenting her annoyance over the nightly routine.

In the film, Khan mentions that boiling milk is the most annoying thing about her stay in Pakistan. She narrates that the chilled milk for her kids was the first thing for her to do after coming back from partying around 1 am. She articulated her emotions of being exhausted and inconvenienced by the regular event cycle. Besides, she pointed out that this was not the conclusion of the procedure; she still had to remove the upper layer, filter the milk, pour it into jars, and cool it down before refrigerating it.

She also made a comparison with the existing situation in Pakistan to her experience in the West and said that if only she could get pasteurised milk like that in supermarkets such as Aldi or Walmart, it would save her a lot of trouble.

Unpasteurized, or raw, milk is product that has not undergone any heating process to eliminate unhealthy microorganisms. More than 95% of the milk in Pakistan is said to be consumed raw, a report by Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan claims. It is a widespread practice in Pakistan and India to boil the milk at home in order to kill the bacteria such as E. coli, Salmonella, and Listeria.

The clip has been viewed almost four hundred thousand times and has gotten many different responses from the public. Some netizens shared Khan’s feelings while others argued that in Pakistan pasteurized milk is not only available but also in a wide variety and that she should choose those options instead of condemning the country.
