The Indian Premier League (IPL), a T20 league that attracts millions of fans globally, has the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as its sole governing body from 2008 to the present day, and has provided a wonderful platform for international cricket talents to display their skills. Among the players participating from different lands, Australians, South Africans, English, Kiwis, West Indians, Sri Lankans, Afghans, and even the less famous ones like the Bangladeshis and Zimbabweans, the IPL has contributed to the making of superstars and millionaires every year.
Moreover, the initial seasons did give the opportunity to the Pakistani players to display their skills in the league. But, the BCCI, because of the deteriorating relationship between India and Pakistan, took a decision to put a two-year ban on the participation of the Pakistani players in the IPL starting from 2009.
Calls To Ban Bangladeshi Players
Not long ago, there were calls for similar restrictions to be placed on the Bangladeshi cricketers as well. The situation has developed due to the anti-India remarks made by some of the Bangladesh politicians, which have been heavily criticized, and the reported increased attacks against minorities, particularly Hindus, in the country. Such events have triggered discussions in India, and there are voices among the public that demand exclusion of Bangladeshi players from IPL for good.
At the IPL 2026 auction, there were a total of 5 to 6 Bangladesh players who had registered, but only the left-handed fast bowler, Mustafizur Rahman, was chosen. He was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), the franchise owned by Shah Rukh Khan, for an enormous amount of ₹9.20 crore.
Political Reactions
The purchase triggered sharp political reactions. BJP leader Sangeet Singh Som criticised Shah Rukh Khan and labelled the decision as being against national interests, even calling Mustafizur a “traitor.” Some leaders supported the demand to remove the Bangladeshi pacer from the IPL, while others, including leaders from the Congress party, strongly condemned these remarks.
BCCI’s Stand
BCCI officials responded to the allegations by claiming that the IPL is entirely devoid of any political interference and that it operates under the strict International Cricket Council (ICC) regulations all the time. One senior BCCI official told InsideSport that Bangladesh is not a foe and there is no cause at all for not allowing Bangladeshi players to participate in the IPL. At the moment, Mustafizur Rahman is still eligible to participate in the upcoming season.
An IANS source quoted another BCCI official saying that the board has not been notified by the government about the ban on Bangladeshi players’ involvement.The official went on to say that where such instructions are lacking, it is not a matter of taking any action and the situation should not be politicised any further.
At this time, the BCCI has stated its position very clearly: Bangladeshi players, Mustafizur Rahman among them, are not prohibited from taking part in IPL 2026.
