Coldest Day of Season in Delhi as Rain Hits Delhi, Noida, Gurugram

A man warms himself by a fire near Jama Masjid during Delhi’s coldest winter day of 2026.

Winter coaxed rains into parts of Delhi-NCR, coming with some fun and at the same time reinforcing the cold wave which the entire region was subjected to. The capital city recorded its lowest temperature of the season on Friday morning, which was 4.6°C.

At first, the dawn images showed the big city being covered in heavy fog, and the people living in the city were experiencing very unpleasant weather – cold and rainy. The temperature at Safdarjung fell to 5.8°C on Thursday, thereby making it the third-lowest temperature of this winter season and also 1.1°C below the average.

A very unforeseen cold characterized the area all day long on Thursday; the maximum temperatures reached at none of the weather stations were higher than the seasonal averages throughout the whole day. The rain was an additional contributor to the cold discomfort and hence people resorted to the old-fashioned ways for keeping warm.

Cold Wave in Early January 2026

The dense fog and cold wave conditions greeted Delhi as a new year. The cold day is defined by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) as a day when the night minimum falls below 10°C or when the day maximum is 4.5–6.4°C cooler than the average.

  • January 6, 2026: Minimum temperature 7.6°C, 0.7°C below normal.
  • January 7, 2026: Maximum 16.7°C (2.3°C below normal), minimum 8.6°C (1.7°C below average).

Taking into account the general weather situation, it is quite obvious that the people living in Delhi-NCR will have to face cold nights, foggy mornings, and almost no rain for the entire week.
