India Assumes BRICS 2026 Presidency; Jaishankar Unveils ‘Humanity-First’ Vision Focused on Global Welfare

With the official inauguration of the BRICS presidency for 2026 by India, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, on Tuesday, released the official logo, theme, and website for the conference and emphasized on ‘humanity-first’ and ‘people-centric’ principles for common welfare.

Mr. Jaishankar said on January 13 at a welcoming event in New Delhi that the main concern of India during its chairship will be to build the strengths and capabilities to harness the collective of BRICS member nations for inclusive development and shared prosperity.

“As India chairs BRICS, we intend to start with the core aspect of a ‘humanity-first’ and ‘people-centric’ approach towards engagement on resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability,” said Mr. Jaishankar, while penning the post on X subsequent to the ceremony.

Twenty years ago, BRICS began in the South Africa, and over time it became a significant vehicle for cooperation between emerging markets and developing countries. Progressively in these years, the very grouping turned out as the voice of the Global South in the greater multilateral system.

What are Indian priorities in BRICS? also mentioned, I suspect, are the four pillars of responsiveness, innovation, partnership, and sustainability? “For India, BRICS is a platform that brings dialogue and development in the right spirit, expected to always be guided by principles such as respect for each other, sovereign equality, and consensus. As BRICS chair, our philosophy will remain inclusive, practical, people-centric, and outcome-oriented,” Jaishankar added.

When Brazil handed over the BRICS presidency to India at Brussels on 1st January, 2026, it was the fourth term of India’s chairmanship with the grouping. In 2021, India held the chair during the high pandemic wave.

BRICS 2026 logo, theme, and website

Inspired by the lotus flower, the BRICS 2026 Logo unveiled on Tuesday wears a motif of the traditional Indian greeting ‘Namaste’ at its heart. The design was voted on by a contest organized by the Ministry of External Affairs on the government’s Citizen Engagement Platform.

This logo is complemented by the new tagline: “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.”

The award-winning artist, Sudeep Subhash Gandhi, said that the theme was expressive of the spirit of India and unity among BRICS countries. It symbolises,”Namaste is a greeting, a gesture of welcome and respect. The lotus is a symbol of prosperity; its colours symbolize the BRICS members and their collective unity.”

Mr. Jaishankar mentioned that BRICS was initiated to foster individual capacities, innovate new ideas and maintain sustainable development for all. It showcases the will of India to create synergy on mutual issues challenging the wealth nations-in a balanced and inclusive manner.

The launch of the official BRICS India 2026 website was announced today (13th January) and from according to the Minister, this platform plans on being the one-stop clearing house for BRICS information on meetings, initiatives and outcomes, engaging with the civil society and, through enhanced transparency, keeping up-to-date information flowing through the year.
