The Sankranti day season has always been the release window with the highest number of movies in the cinema, with several films coming in all at once to the theatres. Most of the time, one of the movies appears clearly as the winner and gets the light of the day while the others at times struggle or get a flat reception at the box office.
But it’s a different story this time around. Hallelujah!!! Almost every of the Sankranti movies released, this time, has been lucky to receive positive reviews, and it is the first festival season in recent times without a single movie in the race.
The mega-release with the Mega star’s support and Anil’s direction started from very good reviews and is now claiming a strong box office. Films such as Anaganaga O Raju, Bhakta Mahasayalu, and Nari Nari, which have also been successful during the festival, are very close behind. Even though the number of screens these films had was different, they all had great collections during the three-day holiday period.
And even Rajasaab, which was released slightly before the Sankranti festival and received mixed to negative reviews, also made good use of the festive atmosphere and obtained respectable box office numbers during the holiday period.
The question remains as to how the films will cope after the festive season, but they have achieved a lot already in terms of performance. Every single movie by the end of the Sankranti period—regardless of the pre-release hype, number of theatres, or critics’ comments—was able to stand its ground; and this is one of the rare occurrences in the festival box-office scenario.
