OnePlus Shutdown Rumors Surface Amid Conflicting Reports

OnePlus phone lineup amid shutdown speculation; company denies closure, says operations continue as usual.

Reports are circulating that OnePlus, the smartphone brand owned by Oppo, may be shutting down — but the company has not confirmed anything officially. Android Headlines claims that OnePlus is being dismantled, citing anonymous employee accounts across North America, the EU, and Asia, as well as market data from several analyst firms. However, the report has also raised questions about its accuracy after the publication disclosed using AI to assist with the article.

As per the report by Android Headlines, the indications point to a very big drop in OnePlus’ business: lessening shipments, ceasing product launches, shutting down main office, and minimizing area operations. The report further asserts that the OnePlus Open 2 foldable and OnePlus 15s compact flagship, which were considered as the major products of the company, have been canceled and that the managerial decisions are now being taken in China.

Declining Shipments and Market Share

The Omdia report mentioned by Android Headlines predicts the OnePlus brand to be responsible for the shipment cut-off of more than twenty percent for the coming year 2024, which will result in a drop from approximately seventeen million units to a range of thirteen to fourteen million units. On the other hand, the shipment of Oppo is expected to be almost two percent more thus it will be around 2.8% up over the same period.

The report also highlights a slump in key markets. India and China account for around 74% of OnePlus’ sales, yet both markets are reportedly weakening. In India, roughly 4,500 retail stores across six states have stopped selling OnePlus phones due to low profit margins. In China, OnePlus’ market share reportedly dropped from 2% to 1.6% in 2024.

Conflicting Statements From OnePlus

Despite these claims, OnePlus India has responded to the rumors. Android Authority reports that the company’s India division said operations will continue “as normal.” OnePlus India CEO Robin Liu also posted on X, stating that the closure reports are “unverified” and “false.”

What This Means for Users

OnePlus might be undergoing a restructuring process internally, however, Oppo has assured that users will still get security updates and warranty support as per the agreement. XDA has contacted OnePlus and will keep the article updated in case more details come out.
