Stock Market Today LIVE: Sensex slides over 700 points, Nifty 50 drops near 25,000; Adani stocks drag

Traders track falling indices on a screen as Sensex and Nifty slip sharply in late trade, led by losses in Adani Group stocks.

The Indian equity benchmarks experienced a significant decline on Friday afternoon when the Sensex dropped over 700 points and the Nifty 50 fell under 1 percent to approximately 25,000 because investors sold Adani Group stocks and market participants maintained a cautious approach.

The domestic markets opened on a steady note because Asian markets showed positive movement after US President Donald Trump announced his decision to withdraw tariff threats that affected Greenland. The market showed early signs of optimism, but foreign fund outflows and mixed corporate earnings reports stopped any potential upward movement.

Nifty 50 opened at 25,344.6 with a 0.22% increase, while Sensex advanced to 82,335.94 with a 0.03% increase. The session experienced increased selling activity which caused both indices to enter negative territory.

Adani stocks under pressure

The Adani Group companies experienced substantial losses which attracted continued investor attention. Adani Green Energy performed as the least successful stock by decreasing almost 8% to an intraday low of ₹835. Adani Enterprises and Adani Energy Solutions both saw their stocks decrease by more than 5% while Adani Ports and Adani Total Gas and Adani Power experienced declines. The group cement stocks experienced decreases, with Ambuja Cements and ACC showing negative performance.

The stock market decline occurred after the United States Securities and Exchange Commission announced its plan to request court permission to serve legal documents to Gautam Adani and Sagar Adani for their ongoing investigation.

Global cues and other markets

Asian markets experienced an upward trend because Wall Street had gained overnight. The Japanese Nikkei and Topix indices moved upwards while South Korean markets showed greater improvement. The three main Wall Street indexes, Dow Jones, S&P 500 and Nasdaq, experienced overnight gains because investors became more willing to take risks after geopolitical tensions decreased.

The Indian government bonds experienced a decline as bond yields increased before upcoming bond sales. The Indian rupee appreciated during the early trading session, rising 17 paise against the US dollar.

Market outlook

Analysts stay cautious about the near term because foreign institutional investors keep selling stocks and earnings create stock-specific price fluctuations and Nifty reaches critical technical points at 25,000. Investors will monitor worldwide events and corporate earnings reports and upcoming policy announcements to determine market movement.

The trading session will provide continuous live updates about market movements and stock performance and international market trends.
