The officials confirmed that an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.7 struck Jammu and Kashmir during the early morning hours of Monday. The tremor began at 5.35 am with its epicentre situated in the Pattan area of Baramulla district.

Authorities reported that they had no information about fatalities or property destruction at the moment they prepared this report.

According to the Android Earthquake Alerts System the epicentre was situated approximately five kilometres from Hanjiwera Bala. The Kashmir Valley tremors spread throughout the region which includes the areas of Srinagar Baramulla Sopore Ganderbal and Pulwama.

The sudden shaking which occurred in different areas of the city caused many residents to leave their homes because they thought there was a dangerous situation. The earthquake caused doors and windows and household items to rattle in some neighbourhoods which created temporary fear in residents who experienced the quake during the early morning hours. The tremor was felt by people living in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

The officials established monitoring of the situation to provide information when needed.
