Former Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni called the current Indian team as “one of the most dangerous teams” who will compete in the 2026 T20 World Cup. The 2007 World Cup champion from India who spoke at a Wednesday promotional event showed confidence that the defending champion team possessed everything necessary to maintain their championship title.
India enters the tournament as heavy favorites because their T20I record shows 51 wins and 8 losses since October 2023.
“Everything is There”
Dhoni described the team’s major advantages as their complete team composition and their extensive player knowledge. The current team structure includes dedicated six-hitters together with a bowling group which includes two top-tier bowlers named Jasprit Bumrah and Varun Chakravarthy.
Dhoni stated that “A good team needs certain elements which this team possesses”. “They have the experience, especially when it comes to this format. They have played under pressure. Players who fulfill different responsibilities have accumulated experience in those specific situations for many years.”
The Only Two Enemies: Dew and a ‘Bad Day’
The “Captain Cool” of previous times showed confidence but he admitted that two elements created anxiety for him: conducting the toss and dealing with the unpredictable nature of T20 matches.
The Dew Factor: Dhoni explained that weather conditions determine the outcome of subcontinental night baseball games. “I hate dew. It changes a lot of things. Even when I was playing, something that really scared me was dew, where the toss becomes crucial.”
The T20 Wildcard: Dhoni explained that while India would win “more often than not” in a ten-match series against any team, the knockout format is different. “The problem is when some of your players have a day off and somebody from the opposition has a brilliant day. That’s where the praying is needed.”
The Verdict
Dhoni concluded by emphasizing the importance of staying injury-free. “If everyone accomplishes their roles, I don’t want to jinx it, but it’s one of the most dangerous teams.”
