U. S. President Donald Trump has called for a new nuclear arms control treaty following the expiration of the last remaining agreement between the United States and Russia which now creates new doubts about potential global nuclear competition.
The New START treaty which the two countries signed in 2010 received extension through former President Joe Biden but now it has ended through its formal expiration which allows both countries to develop their nuclear arsenals without any restrictions. The day after the agreement expired Mr. Trump attacked the treaty by saying it had been poorly negotiated and he claimed that other parties had violated it in major ways.
Mr. Trump proposed to the Nuclear Experts his plan for a new Treaty which would include superior modernized elements to function effectively during future decades.
The Trump administration has consistently pushed for a new arms control framework that would also include China. China maintains its existing nuclear weapons capabilities through active development while it considers American pressure to participate in nuclear arms control talks as unneeded because its nuclear arsenal is less than that of the United States and Russia.
White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt stated that no agreement existed between Washington and Moscow to maintain New START limits during their ongoing negotiations for a new contract.
The United States suspended New START inspections because its relationship with the Biden administration had become increasingly hostile. Russian officials announced on Wednesday that their country would stop observing nuclear warhead restrictions after the treaty had been terminated.
Mr. Trump has initiated diplomatic efforts with Russia again after New START ended. He invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to Alaska last August and has restarted high-level talks. The United States announced its military dialogue with Russia had resumed on Thursday after the two countries and their allies completed trilateral discussions about the Ukraine conflict in Abu Dhabi.
Fresh Arms Race Threats
The end of New START will create a situation that permits countries to develop nuclear weapons without any restrictions according to arms control lobbyists. A group of former senior arms control officials issued a joint statement on Thursday which requested that Washington and Moscow maintain New START limits to build immediate confidence between their two countries.
The treaty termination will lead to reduced nuclear stability because it makes weapons predictions harder which creates greater security dangers and raises chances for nuclear arms races without limits.
U. N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres declared the current situation to be a severe situation which has increased the danger of nuclear weapons being used to the highest level which we have seen in several decades. His remarks follow Russian statements which suggested that tactical nuclear weapons might be used during the Ukraine conflict.
A NATO official who spoke anonymously requested the parties to show moderation while they explained their nuclear viewpoints because the alliance accused Russia of making dangerous nuclear statements. NATO will carry on with its defense initiatives according to the official statement.
China Pushes Back
U. S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said earlier this week that meaningful arms control would be “impossible” without China’s participation. China expressed regret about New START ending but it confirmed that its current position prevents it from taking part in nuclear disarmament discussions.
China’s Foreign Ministry stated its nuclear capabilities operate at an entirely different level than the nuclear capabilities possessed by the United States and Russia.
The United States and Russia together control about 80 percent of all nuclear weapons available worldwide. China possesses a smaller nuclear arsenal than the United States and Russia which has grown by around 100 nuclear warheads each year since 2023. China has an estimated nuclear stockpile of 600 warheads which exceeds the 800 warhead limit that the United States and Russia agreed to under New START.
The United States maintains two allies France and the United Kingdom who together possess approximately 100 nuclear warheads.
Daryl Kimball the executive director of the Arms Control Association announced that China will become part of arms control dialogues at some point. The Trump administration has shown no active efforts to conduct risk-reduction or arms control talks with Beijing since it assumed power again in 2025 according to him.
