U. S. retail giant Walmart has announced a significant pay hike for thousands of employees in its pharmacy division, as part of a broader push to strengthen staffing and expand healthcare services across its stores.
Walmart has announced through a press release that it has promoted 3000 pharmacy technicians to newly established operations team lead positions. The workers involved now receive an average hourly wage of $28 which represents an increase from their previous rate of $22.
“The company stated that it will boost investments for local pharmacy teams when it creates new leadership positions and raises hourly wages for thousands of employees who support customers’ health needs throughout the country.”
How Much Will Walmart Pharmacy Employees Earn?
Under the new structure:
Pharmacy technicians who obtain promotions to operations team lead positions will receive hourly wage increases that result in their pay rising from $22 to $28.
The base pay for team leads who work at different locations ranges between $42 per hour and their hourly pay rate does not include additional bonuses.
Existing pharmacy technicians who currently earn an average of $22 per hour will now be eligible for wages of up to $40.50 per hour
Walmart added that bonus pay may also apply based on location and performance.
Team leads will manage the daily operations of pharmacies while they provide assistance to pharmacists and pharmacy managers who work in all Walmart locations throughout the country.
Why Is Walmart Increasing Pharmacy Pay?
The pay increase comes as Walmart intends to boost its pharmacy workforce while it develops its healthcare services at more than 4600 US facilities. The company is also expanding its digital and healthcare services which now include Better Care Services and Eli Lilly’s LillyDirect program and its enhanced pharmacy delivery system.
Walmart announced that the company plans to expand its pharmacy staff this year while maintaining continuous access to dependable medical services for customers who reside in nearby areas.
The retailer described the investment as more than just a compensation increase, saying it is aimed at strengthening community healthcare services while creating clearer long-term career pathways for employees.
Who Is Eligible?
Walmart said the pharmacy roles are open to a wide pool of applicants. No college degree is required to become a pharmacy sales associate, pharmacy technician, or operations team lead.
The company pays for associates who want to become certified pharmacy technicians. More than 22000 Walmart employees became certified pharmacy technicians through company-sponsored programs since 2016.
Pharmacy associates at Walmart receive a benefits package that includes affordable medical insurance, a 401(k) plan with a company match of up to 6%, parental leave, paid time off, and employee discounts on most in-store items.
Walmart has established its pharmacy business as a major growth opportunity through its recent decision to offer better pay and advancement opportunities to its essential healthcare staff.
