Australia have drafted in Steven Smith as standby cover after captain Mitchell Marsh was ruled out of their T20 World Cup 2026 opener against Ireland due to injury.
Marsh sustained a blow to the groin during training earlier this week, with scans later confirming internal testicular bleeding. news of his absence broke just minutes before the toss in colombo despite his attendance at the pre-match press conference scheduled for tuesday
Cricket Australia (CA) confirmed the development in an official statement.
“Mitchell is experiencing ongoing pain and discomfort which is restricting his movement,” CA said. “Scans have confirmed internal testicular bleeding, and he will require a period of rest and rehabilitation. His return to play will be guided by symptom resolution and medical advice.”
In response, Smith has been asked to travel to Sri Lanka to acclimatise and prepare in case he is required to join the squad officially.
Smith Back in the T20I Frame
Smith last played his T20 International match in February 2024. However, his performance during Big Bash League matches has strengthened his case to return to the team. Sydney Sixers achieved 299 runs from their six batting innings through their veteran batter who maintained a batting average of 59.80 and a strike rate of 167.97.
Smith possesses vital experience which Australia needs because the team already faces numerous player injuries.
The growing number of injuries has created a problem for Australia national team.
Marsh’s absence further compounds Australia’s injury troubles ahead of the tournament. The team lost fast bowlers Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins from their starting lineup while they manage Tim David who suffered a hamstring injury during his BBL season. He will probably play against Zimbabwe on Friday.
Sean Abbott has travelled with the squad as a reserve but is not yet an official replacement in the main roster.
Australia needs Marsh to recover quickly because setbacks have disrupted their preparations for the T20 World Cup campaign which they want to start strong.
