Congress Slams Centre Over U.S. ‘Blackmail’ After 30-Day Waiver on India’s Russian Oil Purchases

Congress scolded the Central government over the U. S.’s temporary 30-day waiver which allows Indian refiners to buy Russian oil, with the U. S. coercion of India’s energy policy as alleged by the Opposition.

Taking a dig at the government, Congress General Secretary, Communications, Jairam Ramesh said of the relationship: He is in X and wrote a rhyming line in Hindi on this order: “Trump ka naya khel, Delli dost ko kaha, Putin se le sakte ho tel, kab tak chalega ye Ameriki blackmail-kijiye,” roughly translating to: “Trump’s new game—telling his friend in Delhi that oil can be bought from Putin. How long will this American blackmail continue?”

Criticism has abounded due to an instance of the state government in the USA confirming that it would allow a temporary extension from sanctions for Indian refiners to buy Russian oil given the overriding energy-gripping concerns from the ongoing escalation with Iran. A waiver of this nature can let the U. S. have a freer hand in preventing a blowout on worldwide oil supplies, according to Bessent.

“The President’s energy priority is gearing for record levels in oil and gas production. To keep oil inline with the world order came, indeed. The Treasury Department has been able to issue a temporary 30-day waiver to permit Indian refiners to purchase Russian crude,” Bessent announced on Wednesday.

He further spoke on the fact that it is intended only to allow already existing transactions, intriguing the blank front lies on a small period where Russian oil may be kept off from the world marketplace.

U. S. is expecting India to buy more energy from America.

Bessant stated that India is a vital partner to the United States, and he believed that New Delhi would purchase more American oil in future.

“India is a key ally to the United States, and we are very hopeful that New Delhi would add to the quantum of one higher of U. S. oil,” Tariff said, referring to the temporary exemption as possibly a calming of tensions in global petroleum markets relating to geopolitics.

Background: Tariffs on Russia Oil Purchases

Earlier, the Trump administration put a 25% punitive tax on oil imports from Russia through India by encouraging India to join the Klondike boondoggle after Indian PM admitted that India ought to jump into the Fukushima energy trap.

However, when the framework for an interim trade agreement was reached between Washington and New Delhi, the tariffs were lifted by the U. S.

It was the understanding that India has committed to the phased reduction of its per-centage energy imports from Russia and ramp-up the patronizing of American energy products.

Russia Oil Imports in Focus

India is now looking much more critically at its oil imports from Russia. Let a few user comments contend that trackers of shipments into that region are likely seeking escapes from such purchases. Traders and terminal operators have stopped catering to Indian cargos. The trade now needs more space for earlier transactions to recover.
