Akira Nandan, the son of Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, filed a court case at the Delhi High Court which claims that an artificial intelligence (AI)-created movie infringes upon his rights of personal identity and secret personal information.
The petition submitted by Akira Nandan states that the film used AI morphing and deepfake technology to illegally duplicate his facial expressions and voice and physical appearance and personal character. He argued that such use amounts to exploitation which has caused serious damage to his reputation.
Akira Nandan requested the court to prohibit distribution of the AI-generated film while he requested the court to order the removal of multiple fake social media accounts and pages which use his identity on platforms that include YouTube Instagram Facebook and X.
The Delhi High Court acknowledged the request by issuing legal notices to the defendants while it prohibited any usage of Akira Nandan’s personal name and image and voice and body appearance through AI and deepfake methods. The court established that creating deceptive and distorted materials which harm a person’s reputation constitutes a violation of their privacy rights.
The High Court instructed Meta, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and X to delete fake user accounts associated with the video and to provide necessary IP address information. Justice Tushar Rao presided over the case proceedings.
Senior advocate Sai Deepak represented Akira Nandan, while advocates Aditya Gupta appeared on behalf of Google and Varun Pathak represented Meta before the court.
