According to reports Amazon is currently negotiating a $50 billion investment deal with OpenAI which will become part of a $100 billion funding round. The agreement would extend their current partnership which allows Amazon to provide cloud computing services to OpenAI while Amazon gains access to OpenAI’s AI technologies including ChatGPT for its platform and employee applications.
Other investors reportedly in discussions include Nvidia and SoftBank, though the round is not finalized. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has been seeking capital from global tech leaders and sovereign wealth funds to support the startup’s costly AI development and infrastructure.
If completed, the investment would deepen ties between Amazon and OpenAI, even as Amazon has previously backed OpenAI rival Anthropic. OpenAI is also preparing for a potential IPO in Q4 2026, with private concerns that Anthropic may go public first.
Neither Amazon nor OpenAI has publicly commented on the negotiations.
