Bangladesh Faces T20 World Cup Crisis After ICC Rejects Venue Change Request

Bangladesh Cricket Board’s T20 World Cup participation hangs as ICC denies venue change request.

In a situation where the International Cricket Council (ICC) denied the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) plea to shift the venue from India to Sri Lanka, the participation of Bangladesh in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 was cast into uncertainty. The ruling sparked a significant controversy among the government, players, and cricket authorities as Bangladesh was exploring ways to remain in the tournament.

ICC Votes Against Bangladesh

During a board meeting lasting over an hour, the ICC put Bangladesh’s proposal to a vote. As per the reports, the plea of the BCB was rejected by all the members apart from two, even though the Pakistan Cricket Board backed the BCB in the last moments. After the ICC turned down the BCB’s request, there was an ultimatum given to Bangladesh: they had to make up their mind about going to India within 24 hours, or else they would be taking a chance to be replaced. The country Scottish is now looked at as a possible team to swap places with in Group C.

“World Cup is a fantasy for all cricketers and fans,” expressed BCB President Aminul Islam, who wished for an eleventh-hour switch. He added that the ICC was made aware of the board’s concerns prior to the voting and that they tried to avert a formal vote but were left with no option.

Why Bangladesh Wants Venue Change

The BCB stated that they do not consider India safe for their players, which led to proposals including:

  • Shifting matches to Sri Lanka
  • Swapping groups with Ireland or Zimbabwe

However, Sri Lanka reportedly refused to host Bangladesh, stating they did not want a new team added to their group.

Players and Government to Decide

Amid heightened tensions, Bangladesh’s sports adviser Asif Nazrul held a meeting with the national team on Thursday at the InterContinental Hotel in Dhaka. The meeting aimed at familiarizing the players with the situation and receiving their feedback, considering the reports that the team was not consulted beforehand.

Captain Litton Kumar Das verified that the players were not part of the discussions at the beginning, thus adding fuel to the fire of controversy.

What Happens Next?

After voting, BCB President Aminul Islam urged the government to take more time to discuss the matter. The ICC was said to have allowed 24 to 48 hours for making a conclusion.

While the official reply is awaited, BCB representatives have indicated that there is a chance of the talks going on and the ICC changing its mind.

What Lies Ahead

In the event that Bangladesh does not communicate its decision to take part in the competition by the due date, then Scotland might take their place and be put in Group C.

Cricket fans all over the world are now keenly waiting for the confirmation from Bangladesh side, since the tournament is scheduled to start on February 7 and continue till March 8.
