Are Banks Open Today?

Certainly, in India, banks are functioning in a majority of states today, since the 17th of January, 2026, is the month’s third Saturday. As per the directions of the Reserve Bank of India, banks will be operating on the first, third, and fifth Saturdays whereas the second and fourth Saturdays will be the days off.

However, there is one exception.

Today Tamil Nadu’s banks are closed due to the Uzhavar Thirunal, the principal day of the Pongal harvest festival. The occasion is mainly celebrated in the state and is a means of thanking the farmers and the whole agriculture community.

Uzhavar Thirunal is a festival that is part of the Pongal festivities which occur in the middle of January. It marks the end of the harvest and the transition of seasons from winter to summer, just as different areas of India are witnessing Makar Sankranti celebrations.
