Chennai on Rain Alert: Cyclone Montha to Bring Heavy Rain, IMD Warns of Severe Weather by Oct 28

The Regional Meteorological Centre, or RMC, Chennai, has its orange alert going, marking the heavy to very heavy rains over Chennai and seven Tamil Nadu districts due to a low-pressure system that is forming over the southeast Bay of Bengal from 21st to 24th October.

🌧 A Low-Pressure System is in the-making over the Bay of Bengal

Per the RMC, the evolving system is now located over the southeast Arabian Sea with an upper-air circulation over the southern Andaman Sea and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal. The system is expected to grow stronger and will change its direction towards the west-northwest, crossing south and west-central Bay of Bengal in the next 48 hours.

⚠️ Eight Districts on Orange Alert

The Indian Meteorological Department, IMD, has announced an orange alert for extremely heavy rain in the following districts on Monday (October 21):
Ramanathapuram, Pudukkottai, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Cuddalore, and Chennai.

Moreover, considerable rainfall is anticipated in the districts of Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Ariyalur, Perambalur, and Sivaganga.

October 22:

Orange Alert: Tiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Ranipet, and Tiruvannamalai.

Heavy Rain: Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, and Tirupattur.

October 23:

Very Heavy Rain: Tiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, and Vellore.

Heavy Rain: Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, and Tirupattur.

October 24:

Intense Showers: Tirupattur, Vellore, Krishnagiri, Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Erode, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, and Dharmapuri.

🌩 Chennai Weather Outlook

The RMC prediction for Chennai is about overcast conditions with sporadic moderate to heavy rains possibly coupled with lightning strikes in various parts of the city. People living in areas that are low-lying and prone to flooding should be vigilant and keep indoor drainage in their houses in case of such rains as it can sometimes lead to localized flooding in the northern Tamil Nadu and the Delta region over the next three to four days.
