The Pongal festival, the Tamil harvest celebration, will be celebrated in the year 2026 on January 14 along with the observance of Bhogi (on January 13) and Kanum Pongal (on January 16) as part of the festival. The festival is a vibrant and cheerful representation of nature, thankfulness, and atmossphere of the earth that is offered to Surya (the Sun God) through the medium of a festival.

About Pongal

Pongal in Tamil Nadu, a harvest- focused holiday to be celebrated until early Makarsankranti, stretches for four days. The word “Pongal” refers to “boiling over” indicating plenty. This edification of still life in clay also speaks of abundance, of nothing left in the pot on the return.

Pongal 2026 Schedule & Rituals

1. Bhogi (January 13)
The first day marks the Bhogi Pandigai festival, which is when the old stuff is thrown into a bonfire called Bhogi Mantalu. This event is a ritual act of purification and regeneration. Homes are decorated with Rangolis, among which fireworks are one of the means to signal and rejoice in the coming of new times.

2. Thai Pongal (January 14)
Thai Pongal, the main day of the Pongal festival, falls in the tenth month of the Tamil calendar. Pongal, which is made of milk, rice, jaggery, ghee, cashews, and raisins, is prepared by the families throughout the festival period and then presented to Lord Surya and Ganesha as a sign of gratitude for the rich harvest.

  • Sankranti Muhurat: 10:43 AM (Drik Panchang)
  • Shubh Muhurat: 03:13 PM

3. Mattu Pongal (January 15)
The event commemorates the cows and bulls, which are indispensable in the farming processes. The animals are cleansed, decorated with flowers, and paraded. In addition, Jallikattu, the traditional bullfighting, takes place in Tamil Nadu.

4. Kanum Pongal (January 16)
The last day of the festival is marked by family reunion, receiving the blessings of the old ones, and engaging in traditional Tamil games such as Uri Adithal (pot breaking) and Vazhukku Maram (slippery pole).

Significance of Pongal

Pongal has been celebrated since the time of the Sangam as a spring festival in the Indian calendar and at the same time, symbolically marked the end of the winter season, renewal of the spirit and the harvesting of crops. By giving thanks to Mother Nature for the natural produce, the people living in that period visualized Pongal.
