Because former crickater Manoj Tiwary has requested an investigation into the current Indian ODI captaincy situation The BCCI should replace Shubman Gill with Rohit Sharma.
Shubman Gill, who recently took over as India’s ODI captain, has faced a tough start. He served as captain during the Australian team match which resulted in a 2–1 victory for Australia against India in the ODI series. The historic home series defeat against New Zealand marked the first time India lost an ODI series to the Kiwis on Indian soil.
India lost two consecutive matches after they won their first ODI match. The Indian team faced criticism because New Zealand competed in the series using their second-string players.
‘Hand Back the Reins to Rohit Sharma’
Manoj Tiwary, an ex-Indian batsman, expressed strong displeasure against the BCCI’s stance of removing Rohit Sharma as the captain of the Indian ODI team.
The current time still exists for actions to take place. The management must correct its mistake. This is not just about bilateral series — the World Cup is approaching. Experiments are unnecessary at this stage,” Tiwary told InsideSport.
Tiwary questioned Rohit’s removal from the team because he believed India would have succeeded against New Zealand if Rohit had remained captain. He reminded fans about India’s Champions Trophy victory which occurred under Rohit’s leadership and their success in reaching the 2023 ODI World Cup final.
‘Rohit Is a Proven Match-Winner as Captain’
Tiwary described Rohit Sharma as a far superior and more experienced leader compared to Gill.
“Under Rohit, the team was moving in the right direction. He is a highly successful captain. India might win the World Cup under Gill, but with Rohit as captain, the chances rise to 85–90%,” he said.
Rohit’s Captaincy Record and BCCI’s Call
Rohit Sharma led India to their 2023 ODI World Cup final match and the team won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025. According to reports Rohit had expressed his wish to lead India during the 2027 ODI World Cup. The BCCI made an unexpected decision to remove him from the ODI captaincy before the Australia tour and they assigned the captaincy to Gill.
Rohit previously withdrew from Test cricket which led to Gill being named as Test captain. Suryakumar Yadav currently leads India’s T20 side. Suryakumar took over Rohit T20 international duties after Rohit announced his retirement from T20 internationals following India’s victory at the 2024 T20 World Cup.
The India ODI leadership situation remains unresolved because Gill’s performance produced mixed results and the World Cup is approaching.
