South Africa Mass Shooting: Nine Dead, Ten Injured in Bekkersdal Tavern Attack

A tavern in nowheresville”s neighborhood experienced an unfortunate incident this weekend when the gunslingers shot and killed 9 people and ten others were left injured. The place was at a bar in a gold-mining area about 40 km southwest of Johannesburg just before 1 a.m. where the shooting took place.

Attack Details
The police reported that about twelve gunmen arrived in two vehicles—a white van and a silver car—and shot at people in the bar and on the terrace. The shooters continued to fire indiscriminately while they were escaping from the scene, and some of the injured persons were already down on the street next to the bar. One of the three dead persons discovered there was the driver of a ride-sharing app who was waiting right outside the bar and was killed.

Investigation and Manhunt
The police force of South Africa has set a manhunt for the assailants and solicited information from bystanders. The reason for the gunfire has yet to be ascertained by the officials.

Second Mass Shooting This Month
In December 2023, the second mass shooting of its kind in South Africa happened. Gunfire broke out on December 7 at a hostel in Saulsville near Pretoria, killing 11 people including a 3-year-old child and wounding 14 others. Furthermore, both shootings occurred very near to illegal liquor stores which are frequently associated with violent crime.
