Indian Railways to Launch Silent, Smoke-Free Hydrogen Train: Affordable Fares to Surprise Passengers

India’s first hydrogen-powered train, built at ICF Chennai, promises silent and eco-friendly rail travel.

The Indian Railways is going to present a huge eco-friendly transport breakthrough by bringing the first hydrogen-powered train in India. This train, which will be completely silent and smoke-free, may start running as early as this month with January 26, 2026 considered a tentative date for the start. Although an official announcement is not made yet, the trial runs have been already successfully conducted.

The hydrogen train is often compared to air travel in terms of comfort and convenience, and it will first be used on the Jind–Sonipat route. The train is going to be manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, and it will cover a distance of about 356 km with gradually more routes service expansion planned.

This hydrogen train is designed to give tough competition to luxury trains like Vande Bharat and Shatabdi Express. It will have an enormous capability of more than 2,600 passengers on each ride and it will operate two journeys every day.Typically, the highest speed of the train will be 150 kilometers per hour which implies that it will be considered as one of the fastest and most modern trains in the country. Besides, it will be the longest hydrogen-fueled passenger train in the world.

What Makes This Train Special?

The hydrogen train does not depend on either diesel or electrification but rather on hydrogen and oxygen. The energy is produced by a process which leaves no emissions at all. The consumption of hydrogen for the train to run only one kilometer is just one kilogram, thus making it both environmental-friendly and economical.

The coaches are fitted with all the modern luxuries including the following: HVAC sensors, state-of-the-art toilets, basins, LED light panels, ceiling fans, and comfortable blue seating. Furthermore, the sliding doors like those in metro cars provide a more contemporary travel experience. The train is beautifully colored in a striking blue and white combination which signifies its avant-garde design.

Route, Speed and Fare Details

In the beginning, the train is going to be running in between Sonipat and Jind and there will be four to five stops made during the entire journey. The speed of the train operation is likely to be between 110 kmph and 150 kmph.

What has really drawn people’s eyes is the expected price of the tickets.According to the rumors, the lowest fare may go down to as low as ₹5, while the highest fare may be approximately ₹25 at the most. However, Indian Railways has not declared the fares yet through an official announcement.

The hydrogen-powered train with zero-emission technology, speed, modern amenities and very cheap tickets is a big step in Indian Railways’ journey to green and future-ready transport.
