Lok Sabha to Resume After Ruckus Over Naravane Memoir: What Triggered the Row

Lok Sabha Ruckus Over Naravane Memoir: What Triggered the Disruption

The Lok Sabha will begin its next session on Tuesday following a day which witnessed multiple breaks and intense arguments that began when participants mentioned an unreleased book by former Indian Army chief General M. M. Naravane.

The session on Monday stopped because Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi used the book which the former Army chief has not yet released during his speech about the President’s address. Gandhi faced strong objections from ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders who claimed he misled the House while showing disrespect to the military.

What occurred during the Lok Sabha session?

Rahul Gandhi stood up to answer comments about nationalism which BJP MP Tejasvi Surya made when he tried to use General Naravane’s memoir quotations about the 2020 India–China military standoff.

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Home Minister Amit Shah immediately objected, questioning whether the book had been formally published. The parliamentary members claimed that they were not allowed to use unpublished works as evidence during their sessions.

Speaker Om Birla declared that members could not use documents, books, or newspaper clippings which unknown to the House had not been officially presented. The Chair repeated his attempts to resolve the conflict but the situation developed into a stalemate which required three House adjournments that extended through the day.

BJP’s objections

BJP leaders claimed that Rahul Gandhi misrepresented facts which caused disrespect to Indian soldiers. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju backed the Speaker’s decision while warning that members who continued to disobey the Chair would face disciplinary action.

PTI reported that government sources told the agency that Gandhi used false information to describe the India–China situation. The agency claimed that existing public records about previous decisions on China matters fulfilled all requirements.

Rahul Gandhi’s response

Rahul Gandhi used the House’s brief afternoon session to defend his comments by stating that he wanted to discuss matters related to national security. The government has refused to let me speak because my memoir contents make them uncomfortable, according to him.

Gandhi said that Prime Minister and Defence Minister feel discomfort about the national security issue because I have been forbidden from speaking. He planned to raise this matter at the Rajya Sabha.

He said that he had quoted from excerpts which appeared in a published article about the former Army chief’s book.

Opposition backs Gandhi

Senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge came out in support of Gandhi, questioning why the government appeared rattled by references to the former Army chief’s memoir. Kharge asked on X platform what information inside the book caused such strong objections which resulted in its delay beyond its scheduled publishing date.

What to expect next

The Lok Sabha will resume its session after political tensions escalated following the announcement of the India–US trade deal. The session will determine whether Parliament can resume standard operations or if ongoing disputes will control its activities.
