The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad K. Sangma, declared his intention to enforce strict punishments against those who caused the fatal coal mine explosion in East Jaintia Hills which resulted in 18 deaths because he deemed the incident to be intolerable. The Chief Minister of Meghalaya announced his intention to enforce illegal mining operations through a military crackdown.
The Chief Minister of Shillong declared that two Cabinet ministers would travel to the explosion site to assess the current conditions. The team received instructions to evaluate rescue operations and relief efforts while working together with local officials and tracking the security situation throughout the impacted region.
The police received orders to find the people who carried out the attack through Mr. Sangma said police have been directed to identify and take firm action against those behind the incident. The state government will enforce strict penalties against illegal mining operations. He said that the people who caused the problem would face no protection from consequences.
The Chief Minister announced that the Meghalaya government would provide an ex gratia payment of ₹3 lakh to each family of the people who died in the explosion.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams currently assist local authorities in conducting rescue and recovery operations at the Thangskai blast site. The officials stated they treat site security as their top priority while they work to rescue anyone who may still be trapped.
The neighbouring state of Assam has shown interest in responding to the disaster. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced an ex gratia of ₹5 lakh each for the families of three victims from his state who were killed in the blast. He said a Cabinet minister and the local MLA have been asked to visit the bereaved families, adding that Assam officials are in touch with their Meghalaya counterparts for coordination.
The recent accident demonstrates how illegal rat-hole mining operations threaten the safety of workers because this practice has caused multiple accidents which result in slow rescue operations that endanger their lives. The researchers continue to investigate what caused the explosion while they work to establish who will face responsibility.
