Parashakti, a so-called high profile film, despite a glamorous cast and a high budget, is heading towards a box office failure after its Tamil release during the Pongal festival. The film has made Rs 100 crore, but this amount is very less given the extent of investment and the efforts in the promotion.
The period drama, which has Siva Karthikeyan, Ravi Mohan, Atharva, and Srileela among its cast, was not able to make a connection with the Tamil audience. The film’s setting of the anti-Hindi movement that once shook the state could not be made to appeal to the present generation by director Sudha Kongara. Thus, the film’s magnificence and enormity seem to have been wasted.
Casting Changes and Production Challenges
Suriya and Dulquer Salmaan were the principal pair in the original cast of the film along with Fahadh Faasil and Nazriya being part of the cast too. However, the project was halted before shooting began.
Chennai’s reports indicate that Suriya was the first one to back up the project owing to his trust in Sudha Kongara, who is the creator of the cult hit Akash Nee Haddura. But, given the delicate topic and possible public outcry, Suriya was said to have withdrawn. The director then went to Vijay Deverakonda who graciously turned down the offer citing his obligations to Kingdom. The film had to undergo a number of casting alterations before it could finally be shot.
Audience Response and Financial Impact
The final outcome has shocked the Kollywood industry. The prospects were very optimistic and the investors were hoping for a nice profit. Still the movie’s slow growth at the box office has ultimately let the distributors and the shareholders down.
While another film was released with very low expectations and is still soaring to hit status, Parashakti is struggling in comparison. The production team now faces uncertainty over the Telugu dubbed version, which was already completed. With no buzz surrounding its release, further delays could turn the situation into a major loss.
