Hyderabad Metro Gets Major Boost: Skywalks to Link Metro, MMTS & RTC, Travel Time to Reduce

Proposed skywalks will connect Hyderabad Metro stations directly with MMTS and RTC bus stops, ensuring seamless and quicker passenger movement.

The Telangana government will implement a major public transportation system that will connect Metro, MMTS, and RTC services throughout Hyderabad Metro to provide residents with better travel options. The initiative plans to decrease traffic congestion which will result in shorter travel times while creating a more efficient public transportation system for the increasing one crore residents of the city.

The Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMTA) under HMDA is developing a comprehensive plan that will establish physical connections between Metro stations and MMTS stations and nearby RTC bus stops to enhance last-mile access. Field surveys are currently being conducted to determine which locations should receive priority attention.

Skywalks for Direct Station Access

The integration plan will create new skywalks and skyways which will connect Metro and MMTS stations through two walkways that keep passengers off busy streets. The elevated walkways will provide a shorter distance for pedestrians to travel between their destinations while they wait for their next transportation connection.

Multiple skywalks will be constructed at important sites which include Begumpet, Nampally, Bharat Nagar and Khairatabad among other locations. A major upgrade at Secunderabad will create a new system which connects the Metro station MMTS station RTC bus stops and Secunderabad Railway Station through one continuous path. A dedicated skywalk will enable passengers to reach the railway station directly from the Metro.

RTC Bus Stops Near MMTS Stations

The RTC bus stops will be moved to locations that are closer to MMTS stations for better commuter access. The new system will remove all walking requirements which have existed since passengers leave suburban trains until they reach their final destination.

Currently, Hyderabad has 51 MMTS stations, but only 21 stations have nearby RTC bus stops. The new system will improve bus service by connecting additional stations. In areas where buses cannot operate close to stations, battery-operated vehicles will be introduced to provide affordable last-mile transport.

Seamless Public Transport Vision

Officials say the integrated transport system will provide immediate bus service for passengers who exit Metro or MMTS stations, which will make their transfers more efficient. Public transport should provide complete accessibility for all areas of the city according to the project’s main goal.

The project will create major benefits for commuters while decreasing private vehicle use and enhancing Hyderabad’s public transportation system.
