🎬 A Blockbuster Comes Home
Kantara: Chapter 1 — the prequel to the 2022 cult film Kantara — has been enjoying a remarkable theatrical run that started on October 2 and has not yet left the news. Following the regional release pattern, the Kannada version has made its way to OTT on October 31, and it is now Hindi-speaking audiences who will soon be able to wander through the mythical realm of Kantara.
The film has already grossed over ₹900 crore worldwide, becoming one of India’s highest-earning films of 2025. Despite nearing its digital debut, it remains a box office powerhouse in select regions.

Speaking at the film’s success celebration in Mumbai, Rishab Shetty, who directed, wrote, and starred in the film, revealed that the prequel’s script underwent over 15 drafts before reaching its final form.
“The original story began as a narration from Shiva’s father,” Shetty said. “As we developed it, we realized the roots of the legend stretched far beyond — to the very origin of Kantara itself.”
He also emphasized that the writing process was driven by authenticity rather than commercial trends, which contributed to the film’s distinctive storytelling and depth.

Set in pre-colonial Karnataka during the Kadamba dynasty of Banavasi, Kantara: Chapter 1 delves into the intense struggle between the forest tribes of Kantara and a ruthless king.
The film stars Rishab Shetty, Sapthami Gowda, Gulshan Devaiah, Rukmini Vasanth, Jayaram, P.D. Satish Chandra, and Prakash Thuminad. Produced by Vijay Kiragandur under the Hombale Films banner, it features stunning cinematography by Arvind S. Kashyap and music by B. Ajaneesh Loknath, both of whom also worked on the original Kantara.
