Telangana Schools Get 9-Day Sankranti Holidays: Students Rejoice

Students celebrate as Telangana announces 9-day Sankranti holidays from Jan 10-18, with schools reopening on Jan 19.

This year, the Telangana government has declared a nine-day holiday for the kids in schools as a part of the prolonged Sankranti holidays. Therefore, the pupils will enjoy nine days without any school. The holiday period will commence on Saturday, January 10, 2026, and continue until Sunday, January 18, 2026, after which the children will go back to school on Monday, January 19.The same scenario happened last year when students were granted only six days off, and this time due to the alignment of the weekends, the extension is granted. Schools in Andhra Pradesh will as well have the same nine-day holidays.

In addition to Sankranti, students will have the next holiday off on New Year’s Day (January 1) and Republic Day (January 26), while all Sundays in January will be non-teaching days. Consequently, the entire month of January will practically be a long break for the students with over half of it devoted to holidays thereby allowing the kids to have time for both study and recreation.

Sankranti has always been associated with the joyous atmosphere in the villages of Telangana and many families from the major cities such as Hyderabad have a tradition of going back to their hometowns during this season. The long vacation has resulted in parents purchasing tickets from the airlines in advance and the government is intending to offer extra bus and train services to accommodate the influx of people traveling during this period. Teachers advise children to have good times but not lose sight of studies, kite-flying with safety measures, and steer clear of roads and power lines while celebrating.

The extended holidays are a blessing for both students and teachers allowing them to celebrate the festival with family and have a great new year start.
