Four Indian Players Who May Miss Out on the T20 World Cup 2026 Squad

Suryakumar Yadav leads India’s preparations for the 2026 T20 World Cup with a revamped and younger squad.

The selection controversy is getting hotter while India is preparing to defend its ICC T20 World Cup title in 2026. India and Sri Lanka will be the co-hosts of the tournament between February 7 and March 8, and the Men in Blue will find themselves in Group A together with Pakistan, the USA, Namibia, and the Netherlands.

The selection committee, along with the new captain Suryakumar Yadav and the definite transition to a younger core, seems to be opting for long-term structure rather than seniority. This change was even more accentuated by the recent announcement of the squad for the South Africa T20I series which excluding players like Rinku Singh indicated a preference for multi-skilled all-rounders.

The transition period was officially marked by Rohit Sharma’s leadership that yielded the 2024 T20 World Cup victory for India and, thereby, brought an end to a 17-year drought. The selectors are leaning on new-generation stars like Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, and Abhishek Sharma while Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja are retiring from T20Is.

Some prominent players are going unnoticed these days among the changes. The following four players are such:

  1. Yashasvi Jaiswal

Jaiswal was a player who many predicted would be the next big thing in the opening slot, but he has recently been concentrating on Test cricket which has reduced his rhythm and consistency in the shorter formats. With Shubman Gill being the long-term opener and getting praise for his aggressive starts, Jaiswal’s absence from the T20I squad against South Africa indicates that his World Cup chances are very thin.

  1. Nitish Reddy

Nitish Reddy has been showing his talent in the IPL from time to time, but the Indian selector has not made him a part of the international squad because of a lack of consistency. The Indian T20I all-rounder positions are firmly occupied by Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube, and they are India’s foremost fast-bowling all-rounders, so it might not be easy for Reddy to break into the setup before the World Cup.

  1. Mohammed Siraj

Part of the winning 2024 Indian team, now Mohammed Siraj seems to have just fallen off the radar. There are Harshit Rana, Prasidh Krishna, and Mukesh Kumar who have come up as strong T20 contenders. With the management focusing on power-play and death-over specialists the very role of Siraj in the T20s is uncertain.

  1. Shreyas Iyer

Unfortunately for Shreyas Iyer, he sustained a serious abdominal injury — which included a spleen laceration — during the third ODI against Australia. Given that he will take time to recover and his already limited T20 opportunities, this injury is likely to have a significant impact on his chances for the World Cup. The route back to competitive cricket will be primarily determined by how well he handles the rehabilitation.

What Lies Ahead?

Even though nothing is final about the squad yet, the performances in the forthcoming bilateral series and IPL 2026 will be crucial. The four players mentioned above have been already relegated to the backseat in the race for a spot in India’s T20 World Cup 2026 lineup.
