Roasted Peanuts Not Safe for Everyone: Who Should Avoid Them and Why

Roasted peanuts may act like poison for people with certain health conditions, warn health experts.

During the cold months, one of the most favorite snacks is hibiscus which is often roasted and served warm. Because of their protein, good fat, vitamin and mineral content, they are frequently referred to as “poor man’s almonds.” Peanuts contain a lot of nutrients, but not everyone can eat them, and those having some pre-existing conditions can suffer from even more serious consequences.

Kiran Gupta, an Ayurveda practitioner, backs the above-stated argument and advises that individuals with certain diseases should steer clear of peanuts because the peanuts might worsen their condition.

Who Should Avoid Eating Roasted Peanuts?

People with Digestive Issues
Peanuts are not easy on the digestive system, especially roasted ones that are often taken as a snack. They are rich in fats that can often trap the digestive system along with the fibers and this would lead to bloating and discomfort in the stomach. If a person is a habitual peanut consumer however, it is recommended that he takes very small amounts of soaked peanuts.

Liver and Gallbladder Patients
Peanuts should be avoided by those suffering from liver ailments or having gallstones. Peanuts are high in fats; therefore, they add a greater responsibility to both the liver and the gall bladder and may deteriorate the already prevailing medical conditions.

Individuals with Peanut Allergies
Peanut allergies are common and they can pose a serious risk. Symptoms like itching, and redness on the skin, and even more severe cases like breath difficulty should all be treated seriously. The worst-case scenario of peanut allergy is death.

People with Diabetes
People suffering from diabetes should definitely stay away from peanuts that are fried, salted or sugar-coated as these can lead to a very quick increase in blood sugar levels. In case peanuts are brought in the diet, it is suggested to use them in very small quantities only after doctor’s approval.

Those with Thyroid Disorders
Peanuts are the nuts that contain the most goitrogens, which are the substances that might adversely affect the function of the thyroid glands. Peanuts should be restricted to the consumption of people with thyroid disorders to prevent any hormonal disruptions.

Healthier Way to Consume Peanuts

Overnight soaking followed by roasting, as recommended by health experts, is implied from the advice given. The nutrients that come with the absorbed peanuts are more accessible to the body, hence their intake. However, it should be done in moderation, as taking too much may cause putting on weight and even increase one’s body temperature.

Peanuts have a lot of health benefits but one needs to be aware of the right way to consume them and the right time to avoid health risks.
