As the Americans say goodbye to 2025, the first day of 2026 will see a considerable alteration in the working hours of the banks, shops, government agencies and delivery services all over the U.S. If anyone has made up his/her mind to run errands, do shopping, or visit any office on New Year’s Day, he/she should check the opening and closing schedules beforehand.
Banks Closed Nationwide
January 1st, 2026, which falls on a Thursday, will be a bank holiday in the United States for New Year’s Day. Hence, large banks will be shut down on that day as follows:
- Bank of America
- Capital One
- Citibank
- PNC
- Wells Fargo
- TD Bank
- Truist
The services at the Branch will be back on Friday the 2nd of January. Customers, however, can still use ATMs, mobile apps as well as online banking services without any break in service.
Government Offices and Courts
All state and federal government offices, including courts, will be closed on New Year’s Day. Legal proceedings and administrative services will restart on the next business day.
Retail Stores: What’s Open and Closed
Shoppers have multiple opportunities on January 1:
- Open: It is anticipated that Walmart and Target will be open on the first day of the new year, as a rule, with regular hours, but there may be some places that open late or close early. Best Known Wholesale Club is usually open, too.
- Closed: Costco will not be operating, as it already announced its policy of closing down on public holidays.
Since hours differ on a location basis, it is always advisable to scrupulously check local store hours in advance.
Mail and Package Delivery
Mail and courier services will be paused on New Year’s Day:
- USPS: No mail delivery; all post offices closed
- FedEx: Regular pickup and delivery services suspended
- UPS: No deliveries or operations
All services are expected to resume on Wednesday, January 2nd in the year 2026.
Stock Market Schedule
The NYSE and Nasdaq and the entire US stock market will remain closed on New Year’s Day. It is also wise for investors to remember that on December 31, New Year’s Eve, the markets close at 1:00 pm ET for early closing.
Plan Ahead
Since numerous crucial services will not be operational, specialists suggest making arrangements in advance for banking, shipping, and official services. Definitely, the ones to trust the most on the first day of the new year are Internet services, digital banking, and e-commerce sites.
Understanding the various holidays will not only save us from the troubles of last minute but will also make our new year transition to be smooth and seamless.
